Canton is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia, about 45 minutes north of Atlanta It is the county seat of Cherokee County. Canton is served by the Cherokee County School District, the ninth-largest school system in Georgia. Canton is home to 3 CCSD high schools, 4 middle schools, and 11 elementary schools. CCSD's high schools all have been named to The Washington Post's list of "America's Most Challenging High Schools." The School District consistently ranks in the top five out of the 180 school systems in Georgia. CCSD's average SAT score margin is 70 points over the National average and 110 points over the State average.

Chattahoochee Technical College's Canton campus is located in a new facility with state-of-the-art technology, small classes, and strong programs that benefit local industry in training students for employment. Chattahoochee Tech has eight campuses state-wide which offer 70+ degrees, diplomas, and certificates in 45 programs of study.


Canton is conveniently located between two interstates running north/south: I75 and I575. Cherokee Area Transportation System (CATS) provides public transportation service for residents of Cherokee County.

The recently expanded Cherokee County Airport is conveniently located seven miles north of Canton off I-575. Atlanta-Hartsfield International Airport is about an hour south of Canton, GA.


Canton, GA as part of Cherokee county consistently ranks lower in unemployment than the state average. The area's largest employers are the Cherokee County School District and Northside Hospital Cherokee. A brand new Northside Hospital Cherokee is under construction in Canton, off I-575 at Exit 19. The new Northside Hospital-Cherokee campus comprises the hospital, medical office building, and 900 parking spaces on a 50-acre complex scheduled to come online in 2017.


Recreation opportunities include several public and private golf courses: Fairways of Canton, Woodmont Golf & Country Club and Canton Golf Club. Other recreation spots in Canton are the G. Cecil Pruett Community YMCA, Hickory Log Creek Reservoir, and numerous parks including Boiling Park, Brown Park, Cannon Park, Etowah River Park, and Heritage Park - featuring over 200 total acres with hiking/walking trails, bike trails, playgrounds, gazebos/pavilions, and ball-fields.

Hickory Log Creek Dam is one of the largest in Georgia not built by the Corps of Engineers or Georgia Power. The reservoir covers 414 acres, features almost 15 miles of shoreline, and holds nearly 6 billion gallons of water. The facility allows public access for boats with electric motors, canoes and kayaks.

Diverse community and cultural opportunities are provided by clubs and civic organizations in the city including Rotary, Optimists and Lions; as well as service leagues and numerous non-profit organizations.

Downtown Canton Loop
