During the Civil War, Kennesaw was the staging ground for the Great Locomotive Chase on April 12, 1862. Its population exceeds 32,000. Over 740,000 reside in Cobb County, Georgia's fourth-most populous county. In Kennesaw, the estimated median household income in 2013 was $61,335. Kennesaw Mountain is located southeast of the city limits in the battlefield park. Its summit is the highest point in the Atlanta metro area, at an elevation of 1,808 feet above sea level. The city was renamed for the mountain.

In 2007, Kennesaw, Georgia was selected by Family Circle magazine as one of the nation's "10 best towns for families". In 2009 Newsmax magazine listed the city among the "Top 25 Most Uniquely American Cities and Towns". The city is also known for its mandatory gun-possession ordinance.

Education
As the second largest school system in Georgia, the Cobb County School District is responsible for educating more than 112,000 students. Fifty-six of the 112 schools in the county system are Georgia Schools of Excellence, and 22 are National Blue Ribbon Schools. Cobb County high schools serving Kennesaw include Harrison, Kell, Kennesaw Mountain and North Cobb. There are 6 Elementary schools and 5 Middle Schools also serving Kennesaw students.

On January 6, 2015, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia approved the consolidation of Kennesaw State and Southern Polytechnic State University. The new KSU features over 140 degree programs including nationally ranked degrees in business, engineering and first-year programs, as well as premier teaching, nursing, architecture, science and math programs.

Transportation
Located about 35 minutes northwest of Atlanta, Kennesaw is easy accessible from Interstate 75 and 575, U.S. Highway 41 and many state routes.

CobbLic is the new name for buses and other transit services provided by Cobb County. New routes and 35 new WiFi-equipped buses serve the residents of Cobb on a daily basis.

Cobb County International Airport - McCollum Field is a major general aviation reliever airport for Hartsfield-Jackson. Atlanta-Hartsfield International Airport is about thirty minutes south of Kennesaw, GA.

Kennesaw Battlefield Park preserves a Civil War battleground of the Atlanta Campaign, and also contains Kennesaw Mountain.
