The town of Powder Springs was incorporated as Springville in 1838 but was changed to Powder Springs in 1859. The new name was derived from the city's seven springs containing minerals that turned the surrounding sand black like gunpowder – hence the name Gunpowder Springs. Over 740,000 people call Cobb County home, making it Georgia's fourth-most populous county. In Powder Springs, there were 14,590 residents in 2014 with an estimated median household income of $57,474. The estimated median home value in 2013 was $ 124,277. Powder Springs is part of the metro Atlanta area, located about 22 miles west of downtown. Powder Springs is just west of the northern intersection of I-285 and I-75.

The city is located minutes from downtown Atlanta, and 30 minutes from Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport. The Cobb Community Transit (CCT) bus system provides public transportation for residents with links to the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) rapid-rail network.
